When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do
Last year, I read an article about prohibiting hijabs' wearing veils in France. The article said because of the more strict inspection to prevent terror, the France government wanted hijabs not to wear headscarves. When they are in chador, only their eyes are seen, so it's relatively hard to identify them. However, hijabs were against this policy because they only followed the religious rule which must be obeyed. As far as I am concerned, wearing headscarves should be banned in a certain country if such a policy is needed. With three reasons, I support the France's situation.
First, the features of covering faces with black scarves can threaten people. When I was walking in Oxford Circus street in London, there were many women in black scarves. The only part of them I could see was their eyes. Between the eyes, thin black band was holding the upper and the rest of the scarf on face. Therefore, two eyes in the cutting square were just seen. It made me keep my eyes on them without being rude, only with curiosity about them. Two or three of them were fine to see, but a group of them were a bit scary. The reason they wear headscarves can be acceptable, but it can scare people enough even though they don't intend to.
Second, as danger of terror gets higher, the security has been tightened up. To identify each person, women's wearing black scarves can be blocking the purpose. By wearing long black or coloured scarves on their body, our curiosities can be up. Worse, they can be suspected in fear of hiding something in the scarves.
Last, wearing the scarves is the strict rule in religion. Nevertheless, each nation has its rules and we should follow the rules when in that country. If you are having a steak, you don't use your right hand as you are from India, and you don't use chopsticks as you are from Korea, Japan, or China. If you are invited to Korean friend's house, you don't enter the house wearing shoes as you are from the US. As you can see, we obey the tradition or custom. It's one of ways to respect each culture. That's why the proverb, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, was born.
To maintain the peace of the world, the respectful attitude is required.
See? The conclusion is always the weakest point in my essay. I don't know how to draw a conclusion.......need a help :(

Interesting thoughts Whidly. This is a big issue and its very controversial.
답글삭제As a counter-argument, I wonder what the statistics are of terrorist acts by people wearing hijabs. As far as I know, the goal is to blend in as much as possible and not stand out.
your topic is difficult.
